Black Jack Justice

Decoder Ring Theatre presents new stories and characters inspired by the classic broadcasts of the Golden Age of Radio, reinvented for our age. Every couple of weeks they give us an episode of either Black Jack Justice, noir detective, or The Red Panda, Canada's Greatest Superhero. All the fun is presented in full-length, full-cast recordings and is completely FREE! (Though they do have a link for donations if you care to help them out)

Both shows are written by the talented Gregg Taylor and each arrival of a new episode is a reason to celebrate. The folks at Decoder Ring clearly love what they do. And so, I think, will you.

Black Jack Justice

Black Jack JusticeTrust me on this one. If you love Old Time Radio Detective Series (and who doesn't?) you MUST check out Black Jack Justice. It has everything we love about the hardboiled private dick. Jack Justice is the cynical detective who narrates the cases in the first person (like all good detectives should). He's a bit more inept than Sam Spade or Philip Marlowe but still manages to solve each case in the end. Like Spade, he loves his women and booze and never lets work get in the way of enjoying either.

His female sidekick plays a larger role than Spade's secretary, Effie and is not quite as dizzy. Trixie Dixon, Girl Detective is a wise-cracking partner who, in a pleasent new twist, also narrates the show. This is really fun. As you might expect, she often sees things a bit differently than Jack does. ;)

Black Jack Justice is a Full Cast Audio Production of the highest quality. The stories and characters are engaging.

The Red Panda

The Red PandaAlthough not strictly a Detective Show, I must mention Decoder Ring Theater's other Flagship program, The Red Panda.

The Red Panda is an exciting Superhero Adventure in the tradition of that OTR favorite The Green Hornet.

From the Decoder website -

Quote from the Decoder Ring TheaterIn the desperate days of the Great Depression, one man brought justice to the dark alleys and gas-lit streets of Toronto. Secretly one of the city's wealthiest men, he lives a dual life as a masked man of mystery. Only his trusty driver, Kit Baxter, who joins him in his quest in the guise of The Flying Squirrel, knows who wears the mask of The Red Panda! Each episode is a self-contained story in the style of the classic broadcast of radio's golden age."

The Red Panda is a real throwback to the Green Hornet style of Adventure story -- complete with sidekick, secret identities and gadgets galore. The guys at Decoder Ring Theatre really nailed it.

Actually there are two different versions of The Red Panda - the version described above and an earlier, goofier version of The Red Panda's exploits during World War Two. The earlier version only ran for six episodes which is unfortunate because, actually, I like this version better.

Do yourself a favor and check out both versions today (the great thing about Podcasts is that they are almost always still available). The Red Panda is great fun.
