Black Jack Justice

Our second Premier Comic is the very enjoyable BLACK JACK JUSTICE.

BLACK JACK JUSTICE currently appears in an ongoing audio drama podcast from the Decoder Ring Theatre.  The podcast is a full-cast, live-action production in the tradition of Sam Spade, Philip Marlowe and Richard Diamond of Old Time Radio fame. 

Like those legendary detectives, Jack Justice is a 1940’s-style, tough guy detective, hard boiled, hard drinking and quick with the ever ready wise crack.  He is a veteren of World War II and occasionally his memories will bring out his softer side, much to his embarrassment.  Like most of the radio-detective series of the forties, there’s plenty of fun mixed in with the excitement.

What sets BLACK JACK JUSTICE apart from the detectives of yesteryear is his partner in crime, Trixie Dixon, ”Girl Detective.”  Trixie is a true partner and she plays a larger role than the women in the classic detective series, like Sam Spade’s secretary, Effie.  Furthermore she is anything but a dizzy broad.   Trixie Dixon is also a hard-boiled, wise-cracking detective who, in a pleasent new twist, also does narration of the stories.  This is a really fun bit.  As you might expect, she often sees things a bit differently than Jack does.

THE ADDICTIVE COMICS’ BLACK JACK JUSTICE

The Story

As soon as Scott and I started discussing the plans for what would become Addictive Comics, I knew there was one person I would contact immediately — Gregg Taylor of Decoder Ring Theater.

I have been a huge fan since the Original Red Panda Series and knew that BLACK JACK JUSTICE would make a great comic. 

To my delight, Gregg was thrilled by the opportunity and has been a big supporter and help to us as we get this underway. 

We are adapting the comic STRAIGHT from Gregg’s scripts — so you know it’s gonna be good. 

The Artwork

BLACK JACK JUSTICE continued to be blessed when we signed my first choice for artist — the very talented Sami Kivelä.  You are gonna love this guy’s work.  Especially the “dames.”  Let’s face it, anyone can draw Iron-man (as John Byrne once said) but it takes a special talent to dramically draw everyday life.  Sami has that rare talent.  Add to that a very real sense of the 1940’s era and a definite feel for Noir and you have a true winner.

I will be doing the inking and I just hope I don’t mess it up.

By the way, for all you art fans — we are going to have an “Art of Black Jack Justice Blog” running alongside the comic series.  We will have some of Sami’s and my sketches and concept drawing for Black Jack Justice along with some of our other work and the Noir-style work of other Addictive Artists.  We plan to discuss each drawing and answer questions.  We also hope to include some fan drawings — so get cracking.    It ought to be a lot of fun.

Trust me on this one – If you love Old Time Radio Detective Series (and who doesn’t?) or Film Noir (and who doesn’t?) or just damn good stories and artwork  (and who doesn’t?), then you MUST check out BLACK JACK JUSTICE. It has everything we love about the hardboiled private dick.
