Welcome to Addictive Comics & The Black Jack Justice Blog. Let’s Talk About the First Two Pages!

Welcome.

We’re glad you could make it because we are VERY EXCITED.

We have quite a bit of ground to cover in this first post so let’s get started.

GREGG TAYLOR — THE MIND BEHIND BLACK JACK JUSTICE & TRIXIE DIXON

First up, Black Jack Justice creator and writer, Gregg Taylor has a few words of welcome for everyone.  Take it away Gregg —

“Over at Decoder Ring Theatre, we’re in our fourth season of providing all-new, full-cast audio drama in the tradition of the Golden Age of Radio. Our detective series, Black Jack Justice has always been one of our most popular offerings, fuelled by my lifelong love for all things Noir, Pulp and Hardboiled.

“Audio Drama fires the imagination as few other forms can. It is not a passive medium, but requires the active artistic participation of the listener to create the world along with us. Every listener has their own image of Jack Justice, Trixie Dixon and the inhabitants of their world, and giving them physcial form at last was not something to be undertaken lightly.

“Thank God Sami Kivelä was there to perform this alchemy for us. His feel for the characters, their world and the classic elements of noir storytelling has amazed me, and I know you will feel the same as the weeks go by.

“With Mark Hester’s inks providing dramatic shadows and graceful light, it’s easy for me to forget that these stories weren’t created for a visual medium at all and get lost in another time, another place and the ‘Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of.’

Thanks Gregg.

WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH THE BLACK JACK JUSTICE BLOG?

Glad you asked.

It might be a long time — maybe never — before webcomics rival the biggest offline comics in terms of readers and reach.  But one thing we have them beat on, hand’s down, is the ability to interact with the readers — almost real time.

Addictive Comics plans to take full advantage of this!

That’s the main reason we have created this blog — and similar blogs for each of our comics.  At first we envisioned having a comments area below the artwork on the actual comic pages.  But experiments with this proved that it was far too limiting for what we wanted to do.

We want, encourage and NEED the readers to comment on anything and everything.

And the Wide-Open nature of a Blog is PERFECT for this.

IS THAT ALL – JUST COMMENTS?

Heck no!  Although comments from you ARE the MOST important part of every blog, we also love the blog as a place to present some of our other work and air some of our thoughts.

Expect to see extra artwork and writing by the creators, more of our thoughts on the pages and much more.

To get us rolling in the right direction — here is a bonus piece from Black Jack Justice Artist, Sami Kivelä, proving he’s not just a one-of-a-kind detective artist –

ONE LAST IMPORTANT NOTE

The comics are on a Page-a-Week Schedule (for many reasons), but we have no such constraints on the blog.  We plan to post more frequently — whenever the mood hits us.  Possibly daily.

We’ll always start a new post for each new Comic Page but there may be several posts between them.

Plus the comments are always available and we hope that you will use them frequently.

So be sure to hit the Black Jack Justice Blog often between Tuesdays (the update day for the Black Jack Justice Comic) to check out what’s new and to read the comments left by other readers.

———————————

That’s all for now.  We open the first comment area for your comments on –

Thank you for joining us and PLEASE participate,

Scott, Mark, Gregg, Sami and the whole Addictive Comics and Decoder Ring Theatre Gangs

PS — You thought we forgot, didn’t you?  Here is the Flying Squirrel drawing by Black Jack Justice inker, Mark Hester, that we promised you.

Hey guys. I’m originally a Sigler Junkie, but I thought I would check this out too and it looks great. And, as I suspect you are hoping, you may find me checking out the original audio book as well.

Good luck with Addictive Comics - really looking forward to it.

Valdi @ 1:07 am

Fantastic! I love it. I am already envisioning T-shirts! Bring it on.

Strangely I found myself reading it out loud and doing the voices … scary.

w_nightshade @ 4:40 am

I have not listened to BJJ as an audio book, but I am very pleased with the first pages of the webcomic! The art is very solid, and I like the use of lettering to differentiate the voice-overs. I hope you have started as you mean to go on, and that the balance of the story is told with the same amount of talent and skill. Well done folks!

w_nightshade @ 4:41 am

P.S. That flamey lady is Firestar, and the trio are from ‘Spiderman And His Amazing Friends’, one of the cartoons of my formative years.

Mark @ 6:57 am

First off — Thank you to everyone for the comments and…

Sorry they haven’t been appearing instantly. I have them set for moderation somehow. I will figure it out. (UPDATE — Got it - I think. All comments should appear instantly.)

But please — WE ARE GETTING THEM and I will put them up as soon as I can.

Mr. Ben

Glad to see you made it over here too.

Yes I suspect that Gregg would love to have some of Sigler’s listeners check out Decoder Ring Theatre. But don’t do it for him or us. Do it for you.

Don’t want to sound like a cheerleader here — but there is a reason Gregg is the first person I contacted when Scott and I conceived of Addictive Comics.

I have been a HUGE FAN of everything DRT has done since day one.

Don’t take our word for it — you know how “shady” we are — check our Black Jack Justice, The Red Panda and Everything else for yourself. I think you will be hooked.

———————-

Valdi,

Tee Shirt? Yeah, those might be in the plans. ;)

Don’t worry — I “heard” the voices the entire time I was inking it. Christopher and Andrea (the live action Jack and Trixie) will be pleased.

Nightshade

Thank you. Very nice words.

The lettering was a fun touch to do. Yes we plan to continue it. We’re doing it on The Rookie also. I was “adapting” the script for Scott’s The Passenger a few days ago and there are something like 15 different fonts in it. Sould be REAL fun. oy!

Yes, Firestar. That’s it. Thanks.

Thanks to everyone who commented and enjoyed Black Jack Justice so far. Please keep the comments coming.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Now that I’ve got that business out of the way…

I loved it. I am a long time Decoder Ring Theatre listener, and had been checking the Addictive Comics blog since I found out about it. I saw the sketches of Jack Justice on the blog but since, like many other devoted listeners, I want to be Trixie when I grow up, I was especially excited to see what the Girl Detective looked like in your creation. Needless to say, I was impressed.

Additionally, I really like the Flying Squirrel art. Is there a Red Panda comic in the works, too?

Raygan @ 7:13 am

I find myself in tears I’m so excited. My favorite podcast of all time is now a comic and I love it. I hear the voices of Jack and Trixie as I read it. Keep up the great work!

Mark @ 7:27 am

Elven,

Ha. Maybe you can work at my detective agency. I plan to call it — Black…uh, Mark… Justice. Yeah that’s it.

Thanks for the comments. Sami is AMAZING. I am just in awe with every panel I ink — and a bit jealous. Just glad he’s on our side.

Yes. I’m beginning to think we should have started with The Red Panda. Glad to see so many people love the stories. Actually we are DEFINITELY working on a RP&FS comic. Just waiting for all the pieces to fall into place.

Thanks

————————-

Raygan

Don’t cry. Glad we could do it for you. Also glad to know other people hear Jack and Trixie. I thought maybe I was going nuts while I inked it. ;)

Do you think my favorite Podcast, “The Restaurant Guys,” would make a good comic?

Maybe not.

Mark

Denis @ 7:47 am

Comic look really good.

Like other people, I can’t help but hear Christopher’s and Andrea’s voices when reading the comic. I can also hear the familiar Jazz music in my mind.

Looking forward to more comics.

Denis

Mark @ 7:56 am

Denis,

What a great idea!! I wonder if we couldn set up the site to play Jazz while you read. Maybe really cool.

…or maybe not.

I believe Dave Sim use to put a list of songs in the comic to listen to while reading Cerebus. (It may have been someone else — but I definitely remember it.) I think the reasoning was to put you in the correct mood — which the right music can certainly do.

Anyway, Thanks for the cool idea. May try it on a future story.

Mark

Gregg @ 8:24 am

Mark,

If you wanted to try having music play, I could send you the underscore loops from the narration… might make it less workplace friendly though ;)

I think it’s grand that folks are asking about the Red Panda, but I’m thrilled that we started this team-up with Black Jack Justice… Partly because I enjoy watching people’s expression when I tell them that one of our shows is a comic now and then tell them which one, but mostly because the darn thing is beautiful.

If I had any doubts about proceeding with the Panda though, they would have been instantly dispelled by Mark’s Flying Squirrel, which I had to wait to see like everybody else (how do you like them apples?)… People often send me links to a National Geographic video about some real wingsuits like that… but last year I discovered an early “Spirit” story in which his regular ol’ Blue Suit had retractable gliding membranes just like Kit’s! Oh Mr. Eisner, is there nothing you didn’t beat me to?

Gregg

Mark @ 8:45 am

Hey, Gregg. Thanks for the comments.

Maybe we could do the Music Story as an experiment. Are there any BJJ episodes that take place in a night club?

Sami’s art is amazing and I am extremely lucky to be able to ink it. I just hope I don’t mess it up.

Thanks for the kind words about the Flying Squirrel. I just got it scanned last night — sorry to spring it on you. I like the wings — but I forgot she is suppose to wear a utility belt. The two don’t seem to work. Have to figure that out.

I just finished Kitchen Sink’s first Eisner “Spirit” Collection and I don’t remember any Gliding Membranes. Must have been after the first year. I was basing them more on actual flying squirrels and — I must admit — my memories of Jim Lee’s “Banshee”. I am such a “Fanboy” sometimes.

Mark

Gregg @ 11:01 am

As far as I know, he never went back to the wingsuit idea. I’ll see if I can find the date… It was faily early, but it may have been a wartime story (which means it may have actually been ghosted, I get my Eisner chronology confused sometimes)

Yes, there is a passing reference to the apparent conflict between utility belt and gliding membranes in the Red Panda novel (available soon… the first of what will no doubt be many plugs). To tell the truth, it never bothered me writing radio… it wasn’t until I had the more descritive novel form to play with that I found it necessary to explain myself :)

Mark @ 3:28 pm

It’s always funny to me what I stumble on when I start trying to draw something from memory. Sure I know what a Horse or an SUV or a Fire Escape looks like — but when I start to draw, I realize I really usually don’t pay very close attention to everyday objects.

I imagine it’s the same with Audio Drama. It’s easy to say she has wings and a utility belt — but when you really start to think about it, you “see” the problem.

I can’t wait for the RED PANDA NOVEL (That may be Plug #2 but I REALLY mean it. Addictive Comics wouldn’t be doing BJJ or RP if Scott and I weren’t huge fans.)

What do you (Gregg and the readers) think of an Eisner-style BJJ story? Might be fun.

Mark

w_nightshade @ 3:55 pm

Of course I noticed the lettering in The Rookie (especially good font choice for Greedok, given Scott’s rendition in the audio book, I felt)… but somehow the style of The Rookie makes the use of different fonts seem like.. a foregone conclusion somehow. In that type of comic story I would expect dramatic lettering - though I think Todd Klein’s work on the Sandman spoiled me in that regard.

I felt the need to comment on it in BJJ because for a more real-world setting and all-human cast, lettering is not an obvious creative outlet. But I felt it was done very nicely, and it was a solid choice.

So there. ;)

Loving the look of the new comic! I have been listening to both Scott sigler and decoder ring for awhile.. glad that 2 of the best content creators have been brought together. can’t wait for more… there is more coming right?? casue i just couldn’t take it if you guys left me.. please.. more.. ;)

Mark @ 5:53 pm

NightShade,

Thank you for the compliments.

What I like about using the computer to letter is the ease that I can do the different styles of fonts. And the choices I have.

You’re right — Greedok’s font looked (to me) like Greedok sounds. And Trixie’s was a bit feminine — so I thought it fit.

Did you notice that Jack’s Font and the Dialogue Font are different? They are close — but different.

In The Passenger (a Sigler Bloodcast story I mentioned earlier) much of the dialogue is over the radio. Instead of always using names, which real people wouldn’t, I thought I would see if different fonts would work. So I ended up with about 12 to 15 different fonts. Should be interesting.

Crash

Thank you for the kind words.

Yes there is more coming —

– More pages of The Rookie and BJJ

– More comics from our Big Two

– and More Superstar Creators.

Keep watching.

Mark

Gregg @ 10:47 pm

Mark,

If we were going to Eisner something up, I’d say let it be The Red Panda. That would be a GAS! ;)

Oh, and the Spirit used his wingsuit in “Toy Planes”, March 9, 1941.

Gregg

December 17, 2008

Mark @ 6:49 am

I will check that Spirit story out. Thanks.

And you REALLY think the Red Panda instead of BJJ for the “Eisner-Look”? Hmmmmm.

I guess I always think of the Spirit as a detective. But he really was more of a Superhero — with the Bat Wings, Flying Car, Mythical Eastern Tricks — So he does fit the Red Panda mode a little better.

Funny, I guess I have been so Black Jack oriented for the past month, it just never hit me.

Interesting…

Mark

jekkeru @ 1:25 pm

Fun read! I’ve listened to all of The Red Panda Adventures and Black Jack Justice. I love the artwork and can’t help but hear Chris and Andrea’s voice narrate. :P I went back and played the audio to go along with the page.

Mark @ 2:56 pm

Jekkeru

Very cool idea.

Gregg and I are discussing (a little bit on the blog, actually) experimenting with sound for the stories. Maybe the sound track or even some mood music.

May not be something we do all the time but a story here and there or as a separate special read.

Thanks again,

Mark

PS My problem is with adapting and inking it, I can’t get Andrea’s voice OUT of my head. There are worse problems though. ;)

Gregg @ 7:46 pm

Our next recording session is in late January… I may try and get together a track talking to Chris & Andrea about the webcomic as a “get it here only” special… so keep your eyes peeled for that in the new year.

Kedar @ 11:45 pm

Fantastic !!!!
Exactly the way I saw it in my head. Love it. Keep it up. Too good.
If this one comes out as a paperback, I’d buy it for sure. I promise.

December 18, 2008

Mark @ 2:14 pm

Kedar,

Start saving. ‘Cuz that’s the plan.

Thanks for the comments.

Sami @ 4:22 am

Hi all,

Thanks for all the comments on my behalf too.

I must say that it has been a privilege to work with Mark and Gregg - they rock!

And remember, the ride has just begun :)

Mark @ 12:03 pm

Thanks Sami,

We’re kinda fond of your work, too.
