Black Jack Justice - Justice Served Cold - Page 3

Hey, we’re glad you could make it.

This is where you can comment on Page 3 and read the comments made by other readers and the creators.

To view the rest of the blog click the BJJ Blog Home link in the top left corner.

————————-

Page 3 really taxed my almost-non-existent lettering skills to the max.  I had to move and squeeze and move some more just to fit everything in.  Those fans of Black Jack Justice who have the shows memorized (you know who you are!) will see that we still had to cut a little bit of the dialogue.  Sorry.

It wasn’t much — but if you want to hear the complete text, visit Decoder Ring Theatre and download the wonderful Podcast of Justice Served Cold.

I am even more sorry that I had to cover up so much of Sami’s beautiful artwork.   After the Holidays are over we plan on creating another blog to feature and highlight the artwork of Black Jack Justice and other artwork by the Creators.  We’ll probably include the “pre-word balloon pages” each week for anyone interested in them.  But until then here is a special little treat.

I HATED to cover these legs up –

Let us know if this kind of stuff interests you (”discussions about the artwork” not the girl ;) )

————————-

While you’re here, don’t forget to have a look around.  There is a gorgeous picture of Trixie by Sami on the post for December 19th.

Once again guys, fantastic.

I was re-listening to this ep today and you have really captured it.

Thank you so much.

Denis @ 8:08 am

Page 3 looks great.

I certainly enjoy reading discussions about the artwork (and the girl).

:)

Now I feel guilty about writing all of them words!

Seriously though, radio drama is an understandably wordy genre, but I’m very pleased with the flow of the pages in spite of that challenge. And I don’t think a thing was lost in trimming the text to make it work!

Mark @ 9:54 am

Valdi and Denis,

Thanks for the kind comments guys. Being an artist, I naturally LOVE to discuss the artwork as does Sami. But you wonder if the readers will also share your interest or you’ll be boring them. Glad to see that many of you do share some interest in it.

Watch for the “The Art of…” Blogs I think there really gonna be a nice and FUN addition to the comics and to the discussions.

Gregg,

Thanks for the good word, dude.

I know we talked about this when I was first adapting the story — but it really looks like less text on the typed page. When you start lettering it — OY!

Naturally this is all part of the learning process for all us. I’ll need to remember to cut the parts of the dialogue that are shown by the artwork (which is most of what I eventually did end up cutting out) or expanding the scene to more pages if necessary.

I think doing the lettering myself (at least until we can get someone good) will also help as I will get a feel for how many words will fit on a page and in a certain-sized panel.

It did give me a good opportunity to plug the art blogs. ;)

Mark

Another great page added.. I love the word flow around the image, while yes it’s alot to read, you make sure not to intrude on the fantastic art. I love the font’s used for Trixie’s and Jack’s internal monologues. it really does show the mild differances between them, and gives for a nice smooth transition.

Really though did I mention how much I like the art? the pencils are very smooth and clean.

Can’t wait for more.

Mark @ 3:19 pm

Marrcus,

Thank you for the kind words. I had a LOT of trouble getting the words to “flow” — but it’s nice that you like the result.

I think the different fonts add to the experience also. It’s something that is probably extremely difficult with hand lettering that is drop-dead simple to do with computer lettering — and most comics don’t use it enough. IMHO. ;)

And, yes, Sami is a wonder.

Rosadraconum @ 9:09 pm

I’m a horrible horrible nitpicky person.

Trixie’s description of the mystery woman mentions gloves. Where are the gloves?

I’m HORRIBLE!

December 24, 2008

Mark @ 9:45 am

Rosadraconum,

You must be very young. During the late 1940’s there was a fad of wearing gloves with fake finger nails glued to them. There’s a famous Life Magazine cover in 1949 of Olivia De Havilland in a pair holding her Oscar for “The Heiress” that many think started the fad.

Women use to paint the nails and they wore the gloves year round — not just in cold weather.

The fad lasted until about 1952.

So Sami was just letting you know — very subtly — that this woman was NOT quite so down on her luck as would first appear. Pretty smart of him.

I’m kidding, of course.

Sami missed it in the drawing and I missed it in the inks and lettering.

I can’t change the artwork — but I will change the lettering.

Thank you for the letter and the chance for me to tell an enjoyably stupid story on Christmas Eve.

Mark

Miss Marlow @ 5:07 pm

Hey Mark I half believed that! Way to mess with my mind :)
I love the art work, especially the palatial office of Jack and Trixie from page two. My mental image will never be the same. Page three looks great too. I LOVE that raincoat!
Thank you for creating this comic! Looking forward to the rest, and happy holidays!

Mark @ 5:44 pm

Miss Marlow,

Good. Might make a story teller out of me after all.

I love the incredible 1940’s feel Sami is giving to everything. Getting the look of the era was so important for us and, I think you agree, Sami nailed it flat.

Thank you and Merry Christmas to you, too.

jekkeru @ 9:52 pm

Wow… I love the drawing without the lettering. It’s very beautiful.

…about the gloves… O.o were you serious about the fake-nail gloves?

December 26, 2008

Mark @ 8:34 am

Jekkeru,

Of course. Check out the April 1, 1949 issue of Life Magazine if you don’t believe me.

Mark

Gregg @ 1:58 pm

You can add me to the list of folks that missed this too! Good solution though Mark.

Isn’t it nice that we get a chance to catch these things before this goes to paper? ;)

Valdi @ 3:42 am

Hey guys, Page 3 seems to have disappeared. No wait, its the link from RSS - it points to test09, going back to the home page and following links it works ok.

Cheers

Valdi

BTW, now I look (after the glove comments), she has some ferocious nails doesn’t she! Maybe I’v been watching too much True Blood.

Valdi @ 4:34 am

further to the glove issue - perhaps they are in her pocket, hanging out so that Trixie can see them, but we can’t from this angle???
